CE 5361 Surface Water Hydrology

Catalog Description

CE 5361: Surface Water Hydrology (3:3:0). Prerequisites: Graduate Student; ENGR 1330, CE 3305, and CE 3354 or equivalent(s)
Advanced study of hydrologic cycle: hydrologic abstractions, surface-runoff mechanics, hydrographs, baseflow seperation, data analysis, reservoir and channel routing, and an introduction to rainfall-runoff modeling

Theory and application of hydrologic concepts; learn how to use predictive tools such as charts and computer programs, and apply these tools to the analysis and design of collection and drainage systems. Preparation of a professional report is a component of this course.

Upon completion of this course, students shall have:

  • Read, synthesized, and communicated ideas presented in current and historical technical literature.
  • Delineate watersheds from maps using Homebrew and GIS approaches, and determine common metrics (area, slope, mainchannel length) using digital planimetry, and software tools.
  • Perform hydrologic computations using JupyterLab, Excel, LibreOffice and other tools, as needed.
  • Perform hydrologic simulation using HEC-HMS (both lumped conventional) and distributed HEC-HMS.
  • Perform integrated hydrologic and hydraulic simulationic analysis of a stormwater management system using SWMM.
  • This graduate course requires sucessful completion of CE 3305 (Engineering Fluid Mechanics) or equivalent, CE 3354 (Engineering Hydrology) or equivalent; Students will apply computational thinking skills from ENGR 1330 and EGR 1206/7.
